Celebrating Community Spirit: How Ballsbridge Lions Club Transformed St. Mary’s Garden

On August 29, 2025, the Ballsbridge Lions Club proudly hosted a joyful community celebration at St. Mary’s Church, Haddington Road, marking the completion of the St. Mary’s Garden Project an initiative that has turned a local park into a vibrant community space with new benches and lighting.

A Celebration of Togetherness

More than 75 guests, including parishioners, neighbours, and local supporters, attended the event. The gathering celebrated more than just a physical transformation, it marked the strength of community spirit in Dublin 4. Guests were welcomed with a wine reception and food kindly provided by three local restaurants. Each visitor received a Lions Club brochure, offering insight into the organization’s work and its ongoing impact.

Music and Memories in the Heart of Ballsbridge

The evening began with live piano music by Ken Tuohy, Irish musician and composer, whose performance set a warm and elegant tone.
Following his set, speeches were delivered by Farrell O’Boy, President of Ballsbridge Lions Club, and Fr. Fachtna McCarthy, parish priest of St. Mary’s Church, whose vision inspired the project.

As Fr. Fachtna prepares for retirement, the Lions presented him with a framed photo of members on the new benches, symbolizing gratitude and friendship.

A Song that United Everyone

One of the most touching moments came when Ken Tuohy introduced an original composition, “A Place in the Garden,” written specially for the occasion.

“Benches here and lights so bright,
St. Mary’s garden shines at night.
Now we have got a place to sit,
Thanks to the Lions this is it.”

The tune quickly became a crowd favourite laughter, clapping, and singing filled the hall as everyone joined in.

Community Support That Made It Possible

The success of the event and the project itself was made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses and volunteers.
Special appreciation goes to:

  • The Dylan Hotel, for sponsoring the wine, food, and providing staff support.
  • Millers Pizzeria and The Orchid Restaurant, for contributing delicious dishes that delighted guests.

Photographer Paul McGovern and volunteer Aanelle, for capturing the moments that tell this story visually.

A Legacy That Will Shine for Years

As the event came to an end, the setting sun cast a golden glow over the new benches and lights. Neighbours gathered in the garden, sharing stories and laughter the perfect symbol of what the Lions Club stands for: community, service, and connection.

Since that evening, locals have already been enjoying the new seating areas, creating a living reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
